Q. What are the
requirements of a NJ school bus driver?
A. School bus drivers
are required to hold a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with school bus and passenger
endorsements, and are also required to meet federal standards for alcohol and drug
testing. The standards include testing
upon initial employment followed by random tests.
In addition, school bus drivers must undergo a physical examination every
two years, a criminal background check upon initial employment and at the time of
renewal of their CDL and submit an annual driver’s abstract (i.e., a history of
motor vehicle violations).
Q. Besides obtaining
a CDL, what other type of training does my child’s school bus driver receive?
A. Employers shall administer
a safety education program for all permanent and substitute drivers and aides. Minimally, this training shall include
student management and discipline; school bus accident and emergency procedures,
conducting school bus emergency exit drills, loading and unloading procedures; and
school bus stop loading zone safety.
Additionally, employers shall administer a safety education program for school bus
drivers which include defensive driving techniques and railroad crossing procedures.
Q. Does the bus
aide have to submit to a criminal history background check?
A. Yes, pursuant to
NJSA 18A:6-7A.et seq., school bus
aides are required to submit to criminal
history background checks.
Q. I have additional
concerns about the driver or bus aide assigned to the route utilized while transporting
my child. Who should I address my concerns
to?
A. Please send an e-mail

your route #, school and the best way to contact you.
Q. My child requires
either a male or female aide specifically.
I need to change the current personnel to reflect my child’s needs.
How can I accomplish this?
A. Pursuant to NJSA 10:5-31

the MOESC is not permitted to gender discriminate at any time.
