Q.   What are the requirements of a NJ school bus driver?

A.  School bus drivers are required to hold a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with school bus and passenger endorsements, and are also required to meet federal standards for alcohol and drug testing.  The standards include testing upon initial employment followed by random tests.  In addition, school bus drivers must undergo a physical examination every two years, a criminal background check upon initial employment and at the time of renewal of their CDL and submit an annual driver’s abstract (i.e., a history of motor vehicle violations).

Q.   Besides obtaining a CDL, what other type of training does my child’s school bus driver receive?

A.  Employers shall administer a safety education program for all permanent and substitute drivers and aides.  Minimally, this training shall include student management and discipline; school bus accident and emergency procedures, conducting school bus emergency exit drills, loading and unloading procedures; and school bus stop loading zone safety.  Additionally, employers shall administer a safety education program for school bus drivers which include defensive driving techniques and railroad crossing procedures.

Q.   Does the bus aide have to submit to a criminal history background check?

A.  Yes, pursuant to NJSA 18A:6-7A.et seq., school bus aides are required to submit to  criminal history background checks.

Q.   I have additional concerns about the driver or bus aide assigned to the route utilized while transporting my child.  Who should I address my concerns to?

A.  Please send an e-mail to buses@moesc.org which includes a brief description, your route #, school and the best way to contact you.

Q.   My child requires either a male or female aide specifically.  I need to change the current personnel to reflect my child’s needs.  How can I accomplish this?

A.  Pursuant to NJSA 10:5-31 Et. Seq. and NJAC 17:27. NJSA 10:5-31 Et. Seq. and NJAC 17:27, the MOESC is not permitted to gender discriminate at any time.
